 The Cost of Discipleship

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today's readings from the Word of God challenge us to reflect deeply on our lives, our priorities, and our ultimate purpose. Jesus calls us to a radical way of living, a path of true discipleship that requires nothing less than our whole selves.

The Call to Wisdom

In the reading from the Book of Wisdom, we are reminded of the limitations of human understanding. We are told, "For who can know God’s plan, or who can discern the will of the Lord?" Our earthly thoughts are fleeting, and our human plans are fallible. Our bodies, like a tent of clay, weigh down our spirits. We struggle to understand even the things of this world, so how can we possibly comprehend the things of heaven?

The answer lies not within ourselves, but in God's grace. "Unless you give Wisdom and send your holy Spirit from on high, no one can come to a knowledge of your will." This is a profound truth. Our lives can only be successful and meaningful when guided by God's divine wisdom and the Holy Spirit. Without this guidance, our efforts are in vain.

Christ's Transforming Love

The second reading from the Letter of St. Paul to Philemon offers a powerful example of the transformative power of Christ's love. Paul pleads with Philemon to welcome Onesimus, his runaway slave, not as a servant but as a "beloved brother." In Christ, the old order of master and slave is broken. All are made equal, united in the family of God.

This is the very essence of Christian community. It is a brotherhood and sisterhood where there is no longer high or low, master or slave, rich or poor. The love of Christ breaks down all barriers and creates a new bond of kinship. This is a call for us to examine our own relationships. Does the love of Christ truly transform the way we see and treat one another? Do we see everyone, regardless of their status or background, as a beloved brother or sister in the Lord? 

The Price of Following Christ

In today's Gospel, Jesus lays out the profound conditions of discipleship. He says, "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple." He asks for a total commitment, a willingness to place Him above all else—family, possessions, and even our own life.

He uses two powerful analogies: a person building a tower and a king going to war. Just as a builder must first calculate the cost and a king must assess his strength, we must also consider what it truly means to follow Jesus. Discipleship is not a half-hearted commitment; it is an all-in surrender. It means:

 * Putting Christ First: Loving Him more than our family, our wealth, or even our own life. He must be the absolute center of our existence.

 * Carrying Our Cross: Embracing our personal sufferings, trials, and weaknesses with faith and hope, as a way of sharing in Christ's passion.

 * Total Dedication: Offering a wholehearted commitment, not a partial one.

A Call to Action

My dear friends, today's readings compel us to ask ourselves some challenging questions:

 * Am I truly seeking God's will in my life?

 * Is my life marked by a love that transforms my relationships?

 * Am I ready to carry my cross and follow Jesus with complete dedication?

We are weak, and our plans may fail. But with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the love of a fraternal community in Christ, and a total commitment to our discipleship, our lives will become truly meaningful.

Let us surrender our own plans and embrace God's plan for us, making Jesus the true foundation, the one tower, and the ultimate goal of our lives.

என் இனிய சகோதர சகோதரிகளே, கிறிஸ்துவில் உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் என் அன்பான வாழ்த்துக்கள்.

இன்றைய நமது வாசகங்கள், வாழ்க்கையின் ஆழமான உண்மைகளைப் பற்றிப் பேசுகின்றன. நமது வாழ்வு, நமது திட்டங்கள், நமது உறவுகள், நமது உடைமைகள் - இவை அனைத்தையும் நாம் எப்படிப் பார்க்கிறோம், எப்படி வாழ்கிறோம் என்பதைப் பற்றி இயேசு நமக்கு ஒரு சவாலை முன்வைக்கிறார்.

வாழ்க்கை ஒரு கோபுரம், நாம் அதன் கட்டிடக் கலைஞர்கள்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு ஒரு முக்கியமான உருவகத்தைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறார். ஒரு கோபுரம் கட்டத் தொடங்கும் முன், அதன் செலவை முழுமையாகக் கணக்கிட வேண்டும் என்கிறார். இது நமது ஆன்மீக வாழ்வுக்கும் பொருந்தும். நாம் இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றுவது என்பது ஒரு கோபுரத்தைக் கட்டுவதற்கு சமம். இது சிலுவையைச் சுமப்பது, நம்மை நாமே மறுப்பது, உலகத்தின் ஆசைகளையும் உறவுகளையும் கிறிஸ்துவுக்காகத் துறப்பது போன்ற கடினமான முடிவுகளை உள்ளடக்கியது.

சிலுவையைச் சுமப்பதே சீடத்துவத்தின் அடையாளம்.

இயேசுவின் சீடராய் இருப்பது என்பது வெறும் ஞாயிறு திருப்பலிக்குச் செல்வதோ, சில ஜெபங்களைச் சொல்வதோ மட்டுமல்ல. அது ஒரு முழுமையான அர்ப்பணிப்பு. அது நம்மை இயேசுவுக்காக முழுமையாகக் கொடுப்பது. இயேசு சொல்கிறார், “தம் சிலுவையைச் சுமக்காமல் என் பின் வருபவர் எனக்குச் சீடராய் இருக்க முடியாது.” இந்த சிலுவை என்பது நம்முடைய தனிப்பட்ட போராட்டங்கள், துன்பங்கள், ஏமாற்றங்கள், மற்றும் நம்முடைய பலவீனங்கள். இவை அனைத்தையும் இயேசுவுக்காக ஏற்றுக்கொள்வது, அவர் பாதையில் உறுதியுடன் நடப்பதுதான் உண்மையான சீடத்துவம்.

உடைமைகள் ஒரு தடையாக இருக்கலாம்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், இயேசு இன்னொரு முக்கியமான உண்மையை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்: “உங்களுள் தம் உடைமையை எல்லாம் விட்டுவிடாத எவரும் என் சீடராய் இருக்க முடியாது.” இது நமது சொத்துக்களை எல்லாம் விற்றுவிட வேண்டும் என்று நேரடியான ஒரு கட்டளை அல்ல. மாறாக, நமது உடைமைகள், நமது பணம், நமது பதவி, நமது உறவுகள் - இவை எதுவும் இயேசுவுக்கும் நமக்கும் இடையே ஒரு தடையாக இருக்கக்கூடாது என்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது. நமது இதயத்தில் இயேசுவுக்கே முதலிடம் இருக்க வேண்டும். உலக காரியங்கள் நம்முடைய ஆன்மீக வளர்ச்சியைத் தடுத்துவிடக் கூடாது.

இரண்டாம் வாசகத்தில், திருத்தூதர் பவுல் ஒனேசிமுக்காக பிலமோனுக்கு எழுதுகிறார். ஒனேசிம் ஒரு அடிமையாக இருந்து, இப்போது கிறிஸ்துவில் சகோதரனாக மாறியிருக்கிறார். பவுல் பிலமோனிடம், ஒனேசிமை அடிமையாக அல்ல, அன்புக்குரிய சகோதரனாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளச் சொல்கிறார். இதுதான் உண்மையான கிறிஸ்துவ வாழ்வு. இயேசுவில், நாம் அனைவரும் சகோதர சகோதரிகள். உலகத்தால் பிரிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் கூட, இயேசுவின் அன்பினால் ஒன்றாக இணைகிறோம். நமது உடைமைகள், நமது சமூக நிலை, நமது வேறுபாடுகள் - இவை அனைத்தும் இயேசுவின் முன் ஒரு பொருட்டல்ல.

அன்புக்குரியவர்களே, இன்றைய வாசகங்கள் நம்மை ஆழமாகச் சிந்திக்கத் தூண்டுகின்றன. நாம் ஒரு கோபுரத்தைக் கட்டுகிறோமா, அல்லது வெறும் அடித்தளத்துடன் நின்றுவிட்டோமா? நம்முடைய வாழ்வில் இயேசுவுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கிறோமா, அல்லது உலக காரியங்களுக்கு அடிமைகளாக இருக்கிறோமா? நம் சிலுவைகளை தைரியமாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறோமா, அல்லது அவற்றுக்கு அஞ்சி ஓடுகிறோமா?

நம்முடைய வாழ்வின் நோக்கம் என்ன? சாலமோனின் ஞான நூலில் வாசிக்கிறோம்: “நீர் ஞானத்தை அருளாமலும், உயர் வானிலிருந்து உம் தூய ஆவியை அனுப்பாமலும் இருந்தால், உம் திட்டத்தை யாரால் அறிந்து கொள்ள இயலும்?” ஆம், நமது சொந்த அறிவால், சொந்த முயற்சியால் நாம் கடவுளின் திட்டத்தை அறிய முடியாது. கடவுளின் ஞானமும், அவருடைய தூய ஆவியுமே நமக்கு வழிகாட்ட வேண்டும்.

நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் கடவுளின் விருப்பத்தை அறிந்து, அவருடைய அன்பில் நிலைத்து வாழ வேண்டுமென்றால், நம்முடைய சுயநலத் திட்டங்களை விட்டுவிட்டு, அவருடைய திட்டங்களுக்கு நம்மை முழுமையாக ஒப்படைப்போம். இயேசுவை நமது வாழ்வின் ஒரே கோபுரமாக, ஒரே அடித்தளமாக, ஒரே இலக்காக ஏற்றுக்கொள்வோம்.

உண்மையான சீடத்துவம் (7.9.2025)

அன்பு சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

1. ஆண்டவரின் திருவுளத்தை அறிதல் 

“ஆண்டவரின் திருவுளத்தைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பவர் யார்?”

உண்மையில் மனித அறிவு குறுகியது, நம் திட்டங்கள் தவறக் கூடியவை. உடலும் உலக சுமையும் நம்மை கீழே தள்ளுகின்றன. விண்ணுலகின் இரகசியங்களை நாம் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாது.

ஆனால் கடவுள் தம் தூய ஆவியை அனுப்பும்போது மட்டுமே, நாம் உண்மையை அறிந்து வாழமுடியும்.

இதன் மூலம் ஒரு உண்மை வெளிப்படுகிறது எனவே கடவுளின் வழிகாட்டுதல் இல்லாமல் நம் வாழ்க்கை வெற்றிகரமாக முடியாது என்பதை உணர்வோம் ...

2. கிறிஸ்துவில் அடிமை சகோதரன் 

 பவுல், பிலமோனுக்கு எழுதுகிறார். ஒனேசிமு ஒருகாலத்தில் அடிமை. ஆனால் கிறிஸ்துவில் புதிய நிலைக்கு உயர்ந்திருக்கிறார்.

“இனி அவரை அடிமையாக அல்ல, உம்முடைய அன்பார்ந்த சகோதரனாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள்.”

கிறிஸ்துவின் அன்பு, மனித உறவுகளை மாற்றுகிறது.

அடிமை – எஜமான் என்ற பந்தம் அன்பின் பந்தமாக மாறுகிறது.

இது கிறிஸ்தவ சமுதாயத்தின் மகத்துவம்.... நம்மிடையே உயர்வு–தாழ்வு இல்லை, எல்லோரும் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள்.

3. சீடத்துவத்தின் விலை 

 இயேசு சொல்கிறார்:

“உங்களுள் தம் உடைமையை எல்லாம் விட்டுவிடாத எவரும் என் சீடராய் இருக்க முடியாது.”

இங்கே இயேசு மூன்று நிபந்தனைகளை முன்வைக்கிறார்:

கிறிஸ்துவை முதன்மையாக நேசித்தல் – குடும்பம், செல்வம், உயிர் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட உயர்வாக கிறிஸ்துவை மையப்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

சிலுவையைச் சுமத்தல் – துன்பத்தைத் தவிர்க்காமல், அதை நம்பிக்கையோடு ஏற்றுக்கொள்வது நம் வாழ்க்கையின் படிப்பினையாக வேண்டும்.

முழுமையான அர்ப்பணிப்பு – அர்பணிப்பு அரைமனதுடன் அல்ல; முழுமனதுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும். 

இவை எளிதல்ல. ஆனால் உண்மையான சீடரால் மட்டுமே இவை சாத்தியமாகும்...

4. இன்று நமக்கான செய்தி

இன்று நாம் இன்றைய இறை வார்த்தையின் அடிப்படையில் நமக்குள் எழுப்ப வேண்டிய கேள்விகள்..

நான் உண்மையில் கடவுளின் திருவுளத்தை தேடுகிறேனா?

என் உறவுகளை கிறிஸ்துவின் அன்பு மாற்றுகிறதா?

நான் எனது சிலுவையைச் சுமந்து இயேசுவின் பாதையில் செல்வதற்கு தயாரா?

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நாம் பலவீனமானவர்கள். நம் திட்டங்கள் தோல்வியடையலாம். ஆனால் தூய ஆவியின் வழிகாட்டுதலால், கிறிஸ்துவில் சகோதரத்துவ அன்பால், சீடத்துவத்தின் முழு அர்ப்பணத்தோடு நாம் வாழ்ந்தால், நம்முடைய வாழ்க்கை அர்த்தமுள்ள வாழ்வாக மாறும்.
