What is True Wealth?

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today's readings compel us to ask a crucial question: What is the true wealth in our lives? Who do we serve—God, or the wealth of this world?

In the first reading, the prophet Amos harshly condemns the wealthy who exploit the poor and the needy to increase their riches. He asks, "Can we buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals?" The condemnation here isn't on wealth itself, but on the mindset that tramples on humanity, mercy, and justice for the sake of money.

The Book of Proverbs tells us, "He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done" (Proverbs 19:17). This is a beautiful truth. Our possessions—be it money, time, or talent—are not truly our own. God has entrusted them to us as a steward. Just as the dishonest steward in the Gospel parable acted shrewdly for his future, we too must be wise. We must use our resources to build a future that is not of this world, but eternal.

Lending to God means showing compassion to the poor, helping the needy, and comforting the afflicted. Our small acts of kindness are seen by God as a great investment.

The Gospel today presents a clear choice: "You cannot serve both God and money." This is a stark truth. Money can be a good servant, but it is a terrible master. If we don't control our money, it will control us.

So let us reflect on our lives. Are we exploiting those around us, or are we helping them? Are we using our wealth for our selfish desires, or for God's glory? By showing mercy to the poor, we lend to God, and for that good deed, our Lord will surely reward us.

கடவுளுக்குக் கடன் கொடுப்போம்!

அன்புக்குரிய சகோதர சகோதரிகளே,

இன்றைய நற்செய்தி, நாம் அனைவரும் ஆழ்ந்து சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய ஒரு முக்கியமான உண்மையை முன்வைக்கிறது. நாம் கடவுளுக்கும் செல்வத்துக்கும் ஒரே நேரத்தில் பணிவிடை செய்ய முடியாது. ஆனால், நாம் கடவுளுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்வதன் மூலம், நமது செல்வத்தை நிலையானதாக மாற்ற முடியும். அது எப்படி?

நீதிமொழிகள் 19:17 மிக அழகாகச் சொல்கிறது: "ஏழைகளுக்கு இரங்குகிறவன் ஆண்டவருக்குக் கடன் கொடுக்கிறான். அவன் செய்த நற்செயலுக்கு ஆண்டவர் கைம்மாறு செய்வார்."

இங்கு நாம் சிந்திக்க வேண்டியது, நம்மிடம் இருக்கும் செல்வம் - அது பணமாக இருக்கலாம், நேரமாக இருக்கலாம், திறமையாக இருக்கலாம் - அது உண்மையில் நமக்குச் சொந்தமானதல்ல. கடவுள் நமக்கு அவற்றை ஒரு பொறுப்பாளரிடம் ஒப்படைப்பது போல ஒப்படைத்துள்ளார். இந்த உவமையின் நேர்மையற்ற வீட்டுப் பொறுப்பாளனைப் போல, நாமும் நம்மிடம் உள்ளவற்றைக் கொண்டு ஞானமாகச் செயல்பட வேண்டும். அந்தப் பொறுப்பாளர் தனது எதிர்காலத்திற்காக விவேகமாகத் திட்டமிட்டது போல, நாமும் நமது நித்திய வாழ்வுக்காகத் திட்டமிட வேண்டும்.

நாம் கடவுளுக்குக் கடன் கொடுப்பது என்றால், ஏழைகளுக்கு இரங்குவது, வறியோருக்கு உதவுவது, துன்பப்படுபவர்களுக்கு ஆதரவு அளிப்பது. நம்முடைய சிறிய உதவி, கடவுளின் கண்களில் ஒரு பெரிய முதலீடாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில், இறைவாக்கினர் ஆமோஸ், ஏழைகளைச் சுரண்டுபவர்களைக் கடுமையாகக் கண்டிக்கிறார். ஏன்? ஏனென்றால், அவர்கள் கடவுளுக்கே எதிராகச் செயல்படுகிறார்கள். ஏழைகளை நசுக்கும்போது, அவர்கள் கடவுளின் இதயத்தையே காயப்படுத்துகிறார்கள்.

ஆனால், பதிலுரைப் பாடலில், ஆண்டவர் ஏழைகளைத் தூசியிலிருந்து தூக்கி நிறுத்தி, குப்பை மேட்டிலிருந்து கைதூக்கி விடுகிறார் என்று வாசிக்கிறோம். இதுதான் கடவுளின் இயல்பு. ஏழைகள் மீது அவர் கொண்டுள்ள இரக்கம்தான், நாம் பின்பற்ற வேண்டிய வாழ்வு.

ஆகவே, அன்புச் சகோதரரே, சகோதரிகளே, நம்முடைய வாழ்க்கையில் நாம் உண்மையாக யாருக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்கிறோம் என்று நம்மை நாமே கேட்டுக்கொள்வோம். நாம் பணத்திற்குப் பணிசெய்கிறோமா, அல்லது கடவுளுக்குப் பணிசெய்கிறோமா? ஏழைகளுக்கு இரங்கி, கடவுளுக்குக் கடன் கொடுப்போம். அந்த நற்செயலுக்கு, நம் ஆண்டவர் நிச்சயமாக கைம்மாறு செய்வார்.
