16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Tangle of Good and Evil

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We live in a world where good and evil are deeply tangled together. We see it everywhere:

In our world: Righteousness coexists alongside deep injustice.

In our families: Moments of profound love are sometimes interrupted by discord and conflict.

In our parishes: Holier impulses live side-by-side with human weaknesses and misunderstandings.

Faced with this reality, we often ask the same question: "Why doesn't God just destroy evil immediately? Why does He allow bad things and bad people to persist?"

This is not a new question. In today’s Gospel, the disciples ask Jesus the very same thing: "Do you want us to go and pull up the weeds?" But Jesus’ response is gentle yet firm: "No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest" (Mt 13:29-30).

Today, God’s Word reveals to us three beautiful divine attributes: *Patience, Mercy, and Hope.

 1. The Lesson of the Gardener

There is a short story about a young gardener who was eagerly tending to his garden. He noticed a small, scruffy plant growing near his prized flowers. Believing it to be a useless weed, he bent down to pull it out.

An elderly, experienced gardener stopped his hand and said, "Wait. Give it a few more days."

The young man reluctantly agreed. A few weeks later, that tiny, overlooked plant bloomed into a rare and incredibly beautiful flower.

The Lesson: Haste often destroys the good that is still in progress. God, the Master Gardener, teaches us the power of patience. What looks like a useless weed to us today might be a beautiful flower in the making.

 2. The Biblical Background: Justice Tempered by Mercy

Today’s scriptures invite us to understand why God is so patient.

 God’s Power is Revealed in His Forbearance

In the First Reading (Wisdom 12), we learn that God’s patience is not a sign of weakness; it is the ultimate expression of His strength. Sovereign in power, He judges with mildness and governs us with great forbearance. He does not use His might to crush or punish instantly; instead, He uses His power to give us time and space to repent. His patience is His love in action.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us in Our Weakness

In the Second Reading (Romans 8), St. Paul reminds us that we are weak, and we do not even know how to pray as we ought. But God does not abandon us in our helplessness. The Holy Spirit Himself steps into our messiness, interceding for us with "sighs too deep for words." God works patiently with our limitations.

In the Gospel, Jesus explains the parable: the field is the world, the good seed represents the children of the Kingdom, and the weeds represent the children of the evil one. The servants want to weed the field now, but Jesus calls for patience. Why? Because in God’s kingdom, a weed can actually turn into wheat.

3. God Does Not Judge Us Instantly

Look at our own lives. If God were to "weed out" the imperfect, would any of us be standing here today?

How many mistakes have we made?

How many times have we fallen, only for God to forgive us and offer us a clean slate?

How many second chances have we received?

We are alive and thriving today not because we are perfectly righteous, but because God has been incredibly patient with us.

 4. Witnesses of Divine Transformation

The history of our faith is filled with "weeds" that God patiently transformed into "wheat":

Saint Peter: He denied Jesus three times in His darkest hour. Yet, Jesus did not reject him. He patiently restored Peter and made him the rock of the Church.

Saint Paul: He began as a fierce persecutor of the early Christians, breathing threats and slaughter. Yet, God met him on the road to Damascus and transformed him into the greatest Apostle to the Gentiles.

The Good Thief: Having lived a life of crime, he repented in his very last moments on the cross. Jesus did not look back at his past; He opened the gates of Paradise to him.

As Saint Augustine famously wrote: "He who is a weed today may become wheat tomorrow."

Saint John Vianney added: "God's patience is the door to our salvation."

5. The Psychological and Pastoral Reality

In our human relationships, we are often quick to label people. If someone makes a mistake, we instantly pigeonhole them: "He is always like that," or "She will never change."

But true human growth is a slow process. To change, people do not need instant condemnation; they need love, acceptance, and a supportive space to grow. Patience is not a sign of passivity; it is the mark of a mature, loving mind.

The Catholic Church reminds us of this pastoral gentleness. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 827) teaches:

"The Church is holy, yet she clasps sinners to her bosom... she is already holy, but is called to undergo purification, penance, and renewal."

God hates the sin, but He deeply loves the sinner. 

6. Practical Steps for Our Daily Lives

How do we live out this message of divine patience in our daily lives?

In our families: Give your spouse, your siblings, and your family members the room to make mistakes and correct themselves. Do not hold their past over them.

As parents: Stop comparing your children to others. Do not judge them by a single failure. Guide them patiently, trusting that God is still working in them.

As youth: If you experience a setback or a moral fall, do not think it is the end of your story. God is not finished with you yet. Keep striving.

In our parish community: Instead of pointing fingers and finding faults in others, let us lift each other up. Let us build a community of encouragement rather than criticism.

Within ourselves: Before we rush to pull out the "weeds" in our neighbor's life, let us examine our own hearts and ask God to heal our own secret faults.

Conclusion: Do We See the Weeds or the Wheat?

Dear brothers and sisters, today’s liturgy leaves us with three profound truths:

 1. God is slow to anger and rich in mercy.

 2. The Holy Spirit is always ready to help us in our weakness.

 3. No one is beyond the reach of God's transforming grace.

This week, let us pray for the grace of patience. When we look at our families, our neighbors, and even ourselves, let us ask:

“Am I only focusing on the weeds, or can I see the precious wheat that God is patiently growing?”

நம் பங்குகளில் (Parishes): தூய்மையான ஆன்மீகத் தூண்டுதல்கள் இருக்கும் அதே வேளையில், மனித பலவீனங்களும் தவறான புரிதல்களும் கூடவே வாழ்கின்றன.

இந்த யதார்த்தத்தை எதிர்கொள்ளும்போது, நம் மனதில் அடிக்கடி ஒரு கேள்வி எழுகிறது: "கடவுள் ஏன் தீமையை உடனடியாக அழிப்பதில்லை? ஏன் தீய காரியங்களையும், தீய மனிதர்களையும் தொடர்ந்து அனுமதிக்கிறார்?"

ஒரு இளம் தோட்டக்காரனைப் பற்றிய சிறிய கதை ஒன்று உண்டு. அவன் தன் தோட்டத்தில் உள்ள செடிகளை மிகுந்த ஆர்வத்தோடு பராமரித்து வந்தான். அப்போது, தான் ஆசையாய் வளர்க்கும் அழகிய மலர்ச்செடிகளுக்கு அருகில், ஒரு சிறிய, சுருங்கிய செடி வளர்ந்திருப்பதை அவன் கவனித்தான். அது ஒரு தேவையற்ற களை என்று நினைத்து, அதை வேரோடு பிடுங்க அவன் குனிந்தான்.

அங்கு வந்த அனுபவம் வாய்ந்த ஒரு மூத்த தோட்டக்காரர் அவனது கையைத் தடுத்து, "பொறு, இன்னும் சில நாட்கள் போகட்டும்" என்றார்.

வாழ்வியல் பாடம்: அவசரப்படுவது, வளர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் நன்மைகளை பெரும்பாலும் அழித்துவிடுகிறது. முதன்மைத் தோட்டக்காரராகிய கடவுள், நமக்குத் பொறுமையின் ஆற்றலைக் கற்றுத் தருகிறார். இன்று நம் கண்களுக்குப் பயனற்ற களையாகத் தெரிவது, நாளை மலரவிருக்கும் அழகான மலராக இருக்கலாம்.

2. விவிலியப் பின்னணி: இரக்கத்தோடு கூடிய நீதி (Justice Tempered by Mercy)

கடவுள் ஏன் இவ்வளவு பொறுமையாக இருக்கிறார் என்பதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள இன்றைய திருப்பாடல்களும் வாசகங்களும் நம்மை அழைக்கின்றன.

கடவுளின் ஆற்றல் அவரது பொறுமையில் வெளிப்படுகிறது

முதல் வாசகத்தில் (அறிஞர்களின் ஞான நூல் 12), கடவுளின் பொறுமை அவரது பலவீனம் அல்ல; மாறாக, அது அவரது எல்லையற்ற வல்லமையின் வெளிப்பாடு என்று நாம் கற்றுக்கொள்கிறோம். ஆற்றலில் உன்னதமானவராகிய அவர், கனிவோடு தீர்ப்பு வழங்குகிறார்; மிகுந்த பொறுமையோடு நம்மை ஆளுகிறார். அவர் தம் வல்லமையைப் பயன்படுத்தி நம்மை உடனடியாக அழிக்கவோ, தண்டிக்கவோ மாட்டார்; மாறாக, நாம் மனம் மாறுவதற்குக் கால அவகாசமும் நல்வாய்ப்பும் வழங்குகிறார். அவரது பொறுமையே அவரது அன்பின் செயல்வடிவம்.

நம் சொந்த வாழ்க்கையைச் சற்றே திரும்பிப் பார்ப்போம். குறையுள்ளவர்களைக் கடவுள் உடனடியாக "களையெடுத்திருந்தால்", இன்று நம்மில் யாராவது இங்கே நின்றிருக்க முடியுமா?

நாம் எத்தனை தவறுகளைச் செய்திருக்கிறோம்?

நாம் விழுந்தபோதெல்லாம், கடவுள் நம்மை மன்னித்து, ஒரு புதிய தொடக்கத்தை எத்தனை முறை நமக்குத் தந்திருக்கிறார்?

நமக்கு எத்தனை மறுவாய்ப்புகள் (Second chances) கிடைத்திருக்கின்றன?

இன்று நாம் உயிரோடு இருப்பதற்கும், நல்வாழ்வு வாழ்வதற்கும் காரணம் நாம் முற்றிலும் நீதிமான்கள் என்பதல்ல; மாறாக, கடவுள் நம் மீது காட்டிய அளவற்ற பொறுமையே ஆகும்.

4. இறைவனின் உருமாற்றத்திற்குச் சான்றுகள்

நம் விசுவாசத்தின் வரலாறு, கடவுள் பொறுமையோடு "கோதுமையாக" மாற்றிய பல "களைகளால்" நிறைந்துள்ளது:

புனித பேதுரு: இயேசுவின் மிகக் கடினமான சூழலில், அவரை மூன்று முறை அறியேன் என்று மறுதலித்தார். ஆயினும், இயேசு அவரைப் புறக்கணிக்கவில்லை. பொறுமையோடு பேதுருவை மீட்டெடுத்து, அவரைத் திருச்சபையின் பாறையாக மாற்றினார்.

புனித பவுல்: ஆரம்பத்தில் தொடக்கக்காலக் கிறிஸ்தவர்களைக் கொடூரமாகத் துன்புறுத்தி, அச்சுறுத்தி, கொலை செய்யத் தேடி அலைந்தார். ஆயினும், தமஸ்கு சாலையில் கடவுள் அவரைச் சந்தித்து, பிற இனத்தாரின் மாபெரும் திருத்தூதராக அவரை உருமாற்றினார்.

நல்ல கள்வன்: தன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் குற்றவாளியாக வாழ்ந்த அவன், சிலுவையில் தொங்கிய தனது கடைசித் தருணத்தில் மனம் மாறினான். இயேசு அவனது கடந்த காலத்தைப் பார்க்கவில்லை; மாறாக, அவனுக்குப் பேரின்ப வீட்டின் (பரதீசின்) கதவுகளைத் திறந்தார்.

புனித அகஸ்தினார் அழகாக எழுதியது போல: "இன்று களையாக இருப்பவர், நாளை கோதுமையாக மாறலாம்."

புனித ஜான் வியான்னி மேலும் கூறுகிறார்: "கடவுளின் பொறுமையே நமது மீட்பின் வாயில்."

5. உளவியல் மற்றும் ஆன்மீகப் மேய்ப்புப்பணி யதார்த்தம்

மனித உறவுகளில், நாம் பிறருக்கு மிக எளிதாக முத்திரை (Label) குத்திவிடுகிறோம். யாராவது ஒரு தவறு செய்துவிட்டால், உடனே நாம் அவர்களை, "அவன் எப்போதுமே இப்படித்தான்" அல்லது "அவள் ஒருபோதும் மாறமாட்டாள்" என்று ஒரு பெட்டிக்குள் அடைத்துவிடுகிறோம்.

ஆனால் மனித வாழ்வின் உண்மையான வளர்ச்சி என்பது ஒரு மெதுவான செயல்முறை. மனிதர்கள் மாறுவதற்குத் தேவை உடனடிக் கண்டனங்கள் அல்ல; மாறாக, அவர்களுக்குத் தேவை அன்பு, ஏற்புத்தன்மை மற்றும் வளர்வதற்கான ஒரு ஆதரவான சூழல். பொறுமை என்பது செயலற்ற தன்மையின் அடையாளம் அல்ல; அது முதிர்ந்த, அன்பு நிறைந்த உள்ளத்தின் அடையாளம்.

கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபை இந்த மேய்ப்புப்பணி கனிவை நமக்கு நினைவூட்டுகிறது. கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் மறைக்கல்விச் சுவடி (CCC 827) கற்பிப்பது போல:

6. நம் அன்றாட வாழ்விற்கான நடைமுறை வழிகள்

தெய்வீகப் பொறுமையின் இந்தச் செய்தியை நம் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையில் நாம் எவ்வாறு வாழ்வது?

 நம் குடும்பங்களில்: உங்கள் துணைக்கோ, உடன்பிறந்தவர்களுக்கோ அல்லது குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்களுக்கோ தவறுகளைச் செய்யவும், அவற்றை அவர்களாகவே திருத்திக் கொள்ளவும் போதிய இடத்தையும் நேரத்தையும் கொடுங்கள். அவர்களின் கடந்த காலத் தவறுகளை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் குத்திக்காட்டாதீர்கள்.

பெற்றோராக: உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளை மற்றவர்களுடன் ஒப்பிடுவதை நிறுத்துங்கள். ஒரு ஒற்றைத் தோல்வியைக் கொண்டு அவர்களை எடைபோடாதீர்கள். கடவுள் இன்னும் அவர்களுக்குள் செயலாற்றுகிறார் என்ற நம்பிக்கையுடன் அவர்களைப் பொறுமையோடு வழிநடத்துங்கள்.

இளைஞர்களாக: வாழ்வில் ஒரு பின்னடைவோ அல்லது ஆன்மீக வீழ்ச்சியோ ஏற்பட்டால், அதுவே உங்கள் கதையின் முடிவு என்று நினைக்காதீர்கள். கடவுள் உங்களோடு இன்னும் தன் பணியை முடித்துவிடவில்லை. தொடர்ந்து முயற்சி செய்யுங்கள்.

நம் பங்குச் சமூகத்தில்: பிறரை விரல் சுட்டிக் காட்டி, குற்றம் கண்டுபிடிப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக, ஒருவரையொருவர் தாங்கிப் பிடிப்போம். விமர்சனங்களை விடுத்து, ஊக்கப்படுத்தும் ஒரு அன்பான சமூகத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்புவோம்.

நமக்குள்ளே: பிறர் வாழ்வில் உள்ள "களைகளைப்" பிடுங்க நாம் அவசரப்படுவதற்கு முன், நம் சொந்த இதயங்களை ஆராய்ந்து, நம் மறைவான குறைகளைக் குணப்படுத்துமாறு கடவுளிடம் கேட்போம்.

முடிவுரை: நாம் காண்பது களையா அல்லது கோதுமையா?

அன்பான சகோதர சகோதரிகளே, இன்றைய திருவழிபாடு நமக்கு மூன்று ஆழமான உண்மைகளை உணர்த்துகிறது:

கடவுள் சினம் கொள்ளத் தாமதிப்பவர், பேரன்பு மிக்கவர்.

தூய ஆவியார் நம் பலவீனங்களில் நமக்கு உதவ எப்போதும் ஆயத்தமாய் இருக்கிறார்.

கடவுளின் உருமாற்றும் அருளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவர் எவருமில்லை.

இந்த வாரம், பொறுமை என்னும் அருட்கொடைக்காக நாம் மன்றாடுவோம். நம் குடும்பங்களையும், அயலாரையும், ஏன் நம்மையே நாம் பார்க்கும்போது, இந்தக் கேள்வியைக் கேட்போம்:

"நான் களையின் மீது மட்டுமே என் கவனத்தைச் செலுத்துகிறேனா, அல்லது கடவுள் பொறுமையோடு வளர்க்கும் விலைமதிப்பற்ற கோதுமையை என்னால் காண முடிகிறதா?"
