18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1. Introduction: Human Scarcity vs. Divine Fullness

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

How often do we find ourselves repeating phrases of lack and exhaustion in our daily lives?

 "I don't have enough money."

 "I don't have enough talent."

 "There is no peace or happiness in my family."

"There is no answer to my prayers."

As human beings, our default reaction is almost always to look at what is missing our limitations, our scarcity, and our weaknesses. But God looks at us through a completely different lens: He sees the fullness of His grace.

All three scripture readings today share a single, unified message: *No one who comes to God will ever remain in lack.* Nothing can separate us from His love, and even the smallest, most insignificant thing we surrender to Him, He can miraculously multiply beyond our imagination.

2. An Illustrative Story: The Single Candle Spark

There is a story about a school teacher who stood before his class and asked a simple question: "What do you have in your hands to change the world?"

One student lowered his head and said, "Sir, I have nothing."

Another young boy raised his hand and replied, "Sir, I only have one small candle."

The teacher smiled and said, "Light it."

The boy struck a match and lit his single candle. Then, using that one tiny flame, the teacher went from desk to desk, lighting every single student's candle. Within moments, a dark classroom was filled with warm, radiant light. A single spark created hundreds of lights.

This is precisely how God works. Just as a tiny candle transformed an entire room, five small loaves and two fish were enough in Jesus' hands to feed five thousand men, along with women and children.

3. Disciples' Calculation vs. Jesus' Compassion

In today's Gospel, as evening approaches in a deserted place, we see two contrasting perspectives:

The Disciples' Perspective: "Send them away!"

The disciples looked at the situation with human logic. They made their calculations:

 No place to accommodate the crowd.

No food available in the wilderness.

No money to buy provisions for thousands.

Their conclusion was simple: A miracle is impossible here. Send the crowd away to solve their own problems.

Jesus' Perspective: "You give them something to eat!"

Jesus did not ask for what they lacked; He simply asked for what they already had.

"How many loaves do you have? Bring them here to me."

All they had were five loaves and two fish. In human terms, it was laughable. But in the hands of Christ, it was more than enough.

4. A Prefiguration of the Holy Eucharist

Notice the five specific actions Jesus performs with the bread:

 1. He took the bread.

 2. He looked up to heaven.

 3. He blessed it.

 4. He broke it.

 5. He gave it to the disciples.

These exact five actions occurred at the Last Supper, and they happen at every single Holy Mass today. This miracle was not merely about satisfying physical hunger for an evening; it was a profound foreshadowing of the Holy Eucharist.

In Catholic teaching, the Holy Eucharist is God's endless gift to humanity. On the altar, a tiny, simple piece of unleavened bread is consecrated and transformed into the **full, living presence of Jesus Christ**. If God can turn a small host into His very Body and Blood, He can certainly transform our small efforts into extraordinary blessings.

 5. Spiritual Meaning: What Are Our 5 Loaves and 2 Fish?

If we look into our own daily lives, what do the five loaves and two fish represent for us?

 The 5 Loaves represent our core life gifts:

  Our Time

  Our Talents

  Our Family

  Our Wealth/Resources

  Our Faith

The 2 Fish represent our basic human response:

   Our Honest Effort

   Our Sincere Love

When we hold onto these tightly, complaining that they are too small, they stay small. But when we place our time, talents, efforts, and love into Jesus' hands, He multiplies them to bless thousands of lives around us.

 6. Practical Applications for Our Daily Lives

How can we put this message into practice this week?

 1. Stop Complaining About Scarcity: Instead of focusing on what you lack, gratefully surrender what you currently have to God.

 2. Trust in Overflowing Grace: God does not give us just enough to survive. The twelve baskets left over show that His grace is infinite and boundless.

 3. Treasure the Holy Eucharist: Do not neglect or take for granted the Table of the Lord. The Holy Mass is where our soul's true hunger is completely satisfied.

 4.  Start Small at Home: A simple gesture of love, a word of forgiveness, or sharing a meal in your home can be the spark for a massive spiritual transformation in your family.

 5. Shift Your Mindset: Before saying "I can't do this," declare with faith, "With God, all things are possible!"

 7. Conclusion: Three Divine Guarantees

As we go forth this week, today's three scripture readings leave us with three powerful guarantees:

Isaiah promises: "All you who are thirsty, come to the waters, buy and eat without money!" (Isaiah 55:1–3)

Saint Paul guarantees: "Nothing in all creation can ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus!" (Romans 8:35, 37–39)

Jesus invites us: "Bring what you have to Me!"* (Matthew 14:13–21)

No matter how weak, limited, or scarce your life may feel right now, surrender it to the Master's hands. He will bless it, break it, and multiply it for His glory.

Let us ask ourselves today: "What are the five loaves and two fish in my life right now, and am I ready to completely surrender them to Jesus today?"

நமது அன்றாட வாழ்வில் பற்றாக்குறையையும் சோர்வையும் வெளிப்படுத்தும் வார்த்தைகளை நாம் எத்தனை முறை திரும்பத் திரும்பச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறோம்?

" என்னிடம் போதுமான பணம் இல்லை."

" என்னிடம் திறமை இல்லை."

" என் குடும்பத்தில் அமைதியோ மகிழ்ச்சியோ இல்லை."

" என் செபங்களுக்குப் பதிலே இல்லை."

மனிதர்களாகிய நமது இயல்பான எதிர்வினை எப்போதும் நம்மிடம் இல்லாதவை, நமது எல்லைகள், பற்றாக்குறை மற்றும் பலவீனங்கள் மீதே திருப்புகிறது. ஆனால் கடவுள் நம்மை முற்றிலும் வேறுபட்ட பார்வையில் பார்க்கிறார்: அவர் தனது அருளின் நிறைவை நம்மிடம் காண்கிறார்.

ஒரு மாணவன் தலையைக் குனிந்துகொண்டு, "ஐயா, என்னிடம் எதுவுமில்லை" என்றான்.

மற்றொரு சிறுவன் கையை உயர்த்தி, "ஐயா, என்னிடம் ஒரே ஒரு சிறிய மெழுகுவர்த்தி மட்டுமே உள்ளது" என்றான்.

ஆசிரியர் புன்னகையுடன், "அதைப் கொளுத்து" என்றார்.

அந்தச் சிறுவன் ஒரு தீக்குச்சியை உரசித் தன் சிறிய மெழுகுவர்த்தியை ஏற்றினான். பின்னர், அந்த ஒரே சிறிய சுடரைப் பயன்படுத்தி, ஆசிரியர் ஒவ்வொரு மேசையாகச் சென்று ஒவ்வொரு மாணவனின் மெழுகுவர்த்தியையும் ஏற்றினார். சில நிமிடங்களில், இருண்ட வகுப்பறை வெதுவெதுப்பான, பிரகாசமான ஒளியால் நிரம்பியது. ஒரே ஒரு சுடர் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான விளக்குகளை உருவாக்கியது.

3. சீடர்களின் கணக்கீடு vs. இயேசுவின் இரக்கம்

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், பாலைநிலத்தில் மாலை வேளை நெருங்கும்போது, இரண்டு மாறுபட்ட கோணங்களை நாம் காண்கிறோம்:

சீடர்களின் கோணம்: "மக்களை அனுப்பிவிடும்!"

சீடர்கள் இந்தச் சூழ்நிலையை மனித தர்க்கத்துடன் பார்த்தார்கள். அவர்கள் தங்கள் கணக்கீடுகளைச் செய்தார்கள்:

கூட்டத்திற்கு தங்குமிடம் இல்லை.

பாலைநிலத்தில் உணவு கிடைக்காது.

ஆயிரக்கணக்கானோருக்கு உணவு வாங்கப் பணமும் இல்லை.

அவர்களின் முடிவு எளிமையானது: இங்கே ஓர் அற்புதம் சாத்தியமில்லை. மக்கள் தங்கள் பிரச்சினைகளைத் தாங்களே தீர்த்துக் கொள்ள அவர்களை அனுப்பிவிடும்.

இயேசுவின் கோணம்: "நீங்களே அவர்களுக்கு உணவு கொடுங்கள்!"

இயேசு அவர்களிடம் இல்லாததைக் கேட்கவில்லை; அவர்களிடம் ஏற்கனவே இருந்ததையே கேட்டார்.

"உங்களிடம் எத்தனை அப்பங்கள் உள்ளன? அவற்றை இங்கே என்னிடம் கொண்டு வாருங்கள்."

அவர்களிடம் இருந்தது ஐந்து அப்பங்களும் இரண்டு மீன்களும் மட்டுமே. மனிதக் கணக்கில் அது வேடிக்கையானது. ஆனால் கிறிஸ்துவின் கைகளில், அது தேவையை விட அதிகமாக இருந்தது.

4. தூய நற்கருணையின் முன்னடைவு

அப்பத்தைக் கொண்டு இயேசு செய்யும் ஐந்து குறிப்பிட்ட செயல்களைக் கவனியுங்கள்:

 1. அப்பத்தை எடுத்தார்.

 2. விண்ணகத்தை நோக்கினார்.

 3. ஆசி கூறினார்.

 4. அதை பிட்டு பிளந்தார்.

 5. சீடர்களுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்.

இந்த ஐந்து செயல்களும் இறுதி இரவு உணவின் போது நடந்தன, மேலும் அவை இன்று ஒவ்வொரு திருப்பலியிலும் நடக்கும் அற்புதங்கள். இந்த அற்புதம் ஒரு மாலையின் பசியைப் போக்குவது மட்டுமல்ல; அது தூய நற்கருணையின் ஆழமான முன்னடைவு (Foreshadowing).

கத்தோலிக்கப் போதனையில், தூய நற்கருணை என்பது மனிதகுலத்திற்கு கடவுள் அளிக்கும் முடிவில்லாத கொடையாகும். பலிபீடத்தில், ஒரு சிறிய, எளிய புளிப்பற்ற அப்பம் அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்டு, இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வாழும் நிறை பிரசன்னமாக மாற்றப்படுகிறது. ஒரு சிறிய அப்பத்தை தனது சொந்த உடலாகவும் இரத்தமாகவும் மாற்ற கடவுளால் முடியுமென்றால், நிச்சயமாக நமது சிறிய முயற்சிகளை மாபெரும் ஆசீர்வாதங்களாக மாற்ற அவரால் முடியும்.

5. ஆன்மீகப் பொருள்: நமது 5 அப்பங்களும் 2 மீன்களும் எவை?

நமது அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையை உற்று நோக்கினால், ஐந்து அப்பங்களும் இரண்டு மீன்களும் எதனைக் குறிக்கின்றன?

5 அப்பங்கள் நமது முதன்மை வாழ்வியல் கொடைகளைக் குறிக்கின்றன:

நமது நேரம்

நமது திறமைகள்

நமது குடும்பம்

நமது செல்வம்/வளங்கள்

நமது நம்பிக்கை

2 மீன்கள் நமது அடிப்படை மனிதப் பதிலளிப்பைக் குறிக்கின்றன:

 நமது நேர்மையான முயற்சி

 நமது உண்மையான அன்பு

அவை மிகவும் சிறியவை என்று முறையிட்டுப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் வரை அவை சிறியதாகவே இருக்கும். ஆனால் நமது நேரம், திறமைகள், முயற்சிகள் மற்றும் அன்பை இயேசுவின் கைகளில் ஒப்படைக்கும் போது, நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள ஆயிரக்கணக்கான உயிர்களை ஆசீர்வதிக்க அவர் அவற்றைப் பெருக்குகிறார்.

6. நம் அன்றாட வாழ்விற்கான செயல்பாடுகள்

இந்தச் செய்தியை இந்த வாரத்தில் நாம் எவ்வாறு நடைமுறைப்படுத்தலாம்?

 1. பற்றாக்குறையைப் பற்றிப் பேசுவதை நிறுத்துங்கள்: உங்களிடம் இல்லாதவற்றில் கவனம் செலுத்துவதற்குப் பதிலாக, தற்போது உங்களிடம் உள்ளதை நன்றியோடு கடவுளிடம் ஒப்படையுங்கள்.

 2. பொங்கி வழியும் அருளை நம்புங்கள்: கடவுள் நாம் உயிர்வாழத் தேவையானதை மட்டும் தருவதில்லை. மீதமான பன்னிரண்டு கூடைகள் அவருடைய அருள் எல்லையற்றது என்பதைக் காட்டுகின்றன.

 3. தூய நற்கருணையைப் போற்றுங்கள்: ஆண்டவரின் பந்தியைப் புறக்கணிக்காதீர்கள். திருப்பலி தான் நமது ஆன்மாவின் உண்மையான பசியை முழுமையாகப் போக்கும் இடம்.

 4. வீட்டில் சிறியதாகத் தொடங்குங்கள்: ஒரு எளிய அன்பின் செயல், ஒரு மன்னிப்பின் வார்த்தை, அல்லது உங்கள் வீட்டில் உணவைப் பகிர்வது ஆகியவை உங்கள் குடும்பத்தில் ஒரு மாபெரும் ஆன்மீக மாற்றத்திற்கான சுடராக இருக்கும்.

 5. உங்கள் மனநிலையை மாற்றுங்கள்: "என்னால் முடியாது" என்று சொல்வதற்கு முன், நம்பிக்கையோடு அறிவிக்கவும்: "கடவுளால் எல்லாம் கூடும்!"

7. முடிவு: மூன்று இறை வாக்குறுதிகள்

இந்த வாரத்தில் நாம் புறப்பட்டுச் செல்லும்போது, இன்றைய மூன்று மறைநூல் வாசகங்களும் நமக்கு மூன்று சக்திவாய்ந்த வாக்குறுதிகளை அளிக்கின்றன:

எசாயா வாக்குறுதி அளிக்கிறார்: "தாகமாய் இருப்பவர்களே, நீங்கள் அனைவரும் தண்ணீரிடம் வாருங்கள்; பணமில்லாதவர்களும் வந்து வாங்கி உண்ணுங்கள்!"* (எசாயா 55:1–3)

புனித பவுல் உறுதி கூறுகிறார்: "படைக்கப்பட்ட எதூவும் நம் ஆண்டவர் கிறிஸ்து இயேசு வழியாய் வெளிப்பட்ட கடவுளின் அன்பிலிருந்து நம்மைப் பிரிக்க முடியாது!" (உரோமையர் 8:35, 37–39)

 இயேசு அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறார்: *"உங்களிடம் உள்ளதை என்னிடம் கொண்டு வாருங்கள்!" (மத்தேயு 14:13–21)

உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை இப்போது எவ்வளவு பலவீனமாக, கட்டுப்படுத்தப்பட்டதாக அல்லது பற்றாக்குறையாக உணர்ந்தாலும், அதை ஆண்டவரின் கரங்களில் ஒப்படையுங்கள். அவர் அதை ஆசீர்வதித்து, பிட்டு, தம் மகிமைக்காகப் பெருக்குவார்.

இன்று நம்மையே கேட்டுக்கொள்வோம்: "இப்போது என் வாழ்க்கையில் உள்ள ஐந்து அப்பங்களும் இரண்டு மீன்களும் எவை, அவற்றை இன்று இயேசுவிடம் முழுமையாக ஒப்படைக்க நான் தயாரா?"
