(23.08.2026) 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
A young man grew up in a devout home where faith was as regular as the morning sun. Every Sunday, his family filled the same pew, recited the same prayers, and lived by a clear moral compass.
But when he left for college, that structured faith began to crumble under the weight of independence, mistakes, and new influences. One evening, feeling lost and distant from his roots, he wandered into a quiet chapel during Eucharistic Adoration.
Looking at the monstrance, no longer surrounded by family expectations or childhood routines, a single thought pierced his heart: _Who is He to me, right now?_
In that silence, faith stopped being a set of rules inherited from his parents and became a living, breathing encounter.
That turning point is the exact moment Jesus brings His disciples to in today’s Gospel at Caesarea Philippi.
1. "Who do people say I am?" Beyond Secondhand Faith*
Jesus begins with a light, almost conversational question: "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
The disciples quickly list the public opinions: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. It is easy to talk about what others think.
Many of us live in this first stage of faith. It is the inherited faith of our families, our catechists, our parish. We learn that Jesus is a great teacher, a miracle worker, a noble historical figure. We learn to pray before meals and come to Mass.
Secondhand faith is a necessary foundation, but if we stay there, our faith remains an idea about someone else’s experience, not our own.
2. "Who do _you_ say I am?" — The Personal Encounter
Then Jesus shifts His gaze and cuts through the chatter: "But what about you? Who do you say I am?"
This question demands an answer from the heart, not from a textbook. Simon Peter steps forward and declares, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus tells him this truth was not revealed by flesh and blood, but by the Father in heaven.
Moving from _knowing about_ Jesus to _truly knowing_ Jesus requires personal revelation. It often happens not when life is perfect, but when life gets messy — when our plans fail, when grief comes, when we hit rock bottom. In those moments of brokenness, Jesus stops being a historical figure and becomes our personal Savior, our anchor, our friend.
3. "Who are you in Christ?" — Claiming Your True Identity
Notice what happens the moment Peter proclaims who Jesus is. Jesus immediately tells Peter who _he_ is: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church."
When you discover who Jesus is to you, you discover who you are.
The world tries to define us by our job title, our bank account, our social media status, or our past mistakes. But Christ defines us by our sonship and daughterhood in Him.
Think of St. Maximilian Kolbe in Auschwitz. When a man was selected to die of starvation, Kolbe stepped forward to take his place. The Nazi commander demanded, "Who are you?" Kolbe did not give his prisoner number or his academic credentials. He simply answered, "I am a Catholic priest."
His identity was so firmly rooted in Christ that even in the darkest valley on earth, he knew exactly who he was and what he was called to do.
Conclusion: Answering the Call Today
So as we approach the altar today, Jesus turns that same eternal question toward each of us: Who do you say I am?
Leave the secondhand answers behind. In the quiet of this Mass, look upon the Eucharist and make Peter’s confession your own:
"Lord, You are my Savior, my strength, and my true identity."Amen.
