22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20:7–9

 Romans 12:1–2

 Matthew 16:21–27

Embracing the cost of discipleship, carrying our daily cross, and allowing God's love to burn like a fire in our hearts.

 1. Introduction: The Weight of Doing What Is Right

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Have you ever tried your very best to do the right thing, only to be misunderstood, criticized, or left feeling exhausted? Have you ever chosen honesty, forgiveness, or fidelity in a world that promotes shortcuts, revenge, and selfishness, only to feel like you were paying a heavy price for your goodness?

In those difficult moments, it is natural to ask: Lord, why does choosing love have to hurt so much? Why is carrying a good heart so heavy?

Today's scriptures address this exact human pain. We meet the prophet Jeremiah crying out to God in raw, honest frustration because speaking the truth brought him rejection. In the Gospel, we hear Jesus giving us a sobering truth: to follow Him is not a walk of easy comfort, but a journey of taking up our cross every single day.

 2. An Illustrative Story: The Traveler and His Cross

There is a simple story about a traveler who was walking a long, narrow road toward the Eternal City. Like everyone on the journey, he carried a heavy wooden cross on his shoulders. After walking for many miles under the hot sun, he grew tired and complained to God: Lord, this cross is far too heavy and long. Please let me cut off just a little piece of it so I can travel lighter.

In his mind, he heard a quiet voice say: If that is your wish, you may cut it. So the traveler took a saw and cut off a large piece of his cross. Instantly, he felt relieved and walked ahead much faster than the others.

Eventually, the road came to a sudden end at the edge of a deep, wide canyon. On the other side of the canyon lay the beautiful gates of the Eternal City. There were no bridges, no boats, and no other way across. The other travelers came up, laid their full-sized crosses across the chasm, and walked safely over them to the other side.

The traveler tried to lay his shortened cross across the gap, but it was too short and fell into the deep gorge below. He realized too late that the very cross he tried to trim down was meant to be his bridge to salvation.

Our daily crosses in life are not meant to destroy us; they are designed by God to build our character, deepen our love, and become our bridge to eternal joy.

 3. Jeremiah's Heartfelt Cry and Jesus' Call to the Cross

In our First Reading, Jeremiah utters one of the most honest and emotional prayers in all of Holy Scripture. He cries out: You duped me, O Lord, and I let myself be duped! You were stronger than I, and you prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me.

Jeremiah had faithfully preached God's message, but instead of gratitude, he received hatred, imprisonment, and ridicule. He was so deeply hurt that he decided to quit: I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak his name no more! But then Jeremiah reveals something extraordinary: But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it. Even in his distress, Jeremiah could not stop loving God, because God's word was a fire burning within him.

In the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, Jesus foretells His upcoming suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter, who had just proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, takes Jesus aside and rebukes Him: God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.

Peter wanted a glory without suffering, a crown without a cross. But Jesus turns to Peter and delivers a sharp rebuke: Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.

Then Jesus looks at all His disciples and declares: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

 4. Catholic Teaching and the Wisdom of the Saints

The Church and the Saints provide deep clarity on why the cross is essential for every Christian:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church:

CCC 2015 teaches that spiritual progress entails askesis and mortification that gradually lead to living in the peace and joy of the Beatitudes. The way of perfection passes by way of the Cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle.

CCC 618 reminds us that by His holy passion, Christ has given us an example to follow. He desires to associate with His redeeming sacrifice those who were to be its first beneficiaries.

Words from the Saints:

Saint Rose of Lima boldly declared: Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.

Saint John of the Cross taught: Whenever anything disagreeable or difficult happens to you, remember Christ crucified and be silent.

Saint Augustine wrote: Do you wish to follow Christ? Take up your cross, for without a cross you cannot reach the crown of glory.

 5. Practical Applications for Our Daily Lives

How can we live out this call to take up our cross and follow Jesus this week?

Be Completely Honest with God in Prayer: Do not hide your pain, confusion, or exhaustion from God. Like Jeremiah, bring your raw feelings to Him in prayer. God can handle your tears, your doubts, and your cries.

Accept Your Daily Cross with Love: A cross is rarely a giant wood beam; it is usually the quiet, everyday difficulties—caring for a sick family member, dealing with a difficult coworker, suffering an illness with patience, or forgiving someone who hurt you.

Do Not Conform to the World: As Saint Paul urges us in Romans 12, do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Do not lower your moral standards just because everyone around you is doing so.

Offer Up Your Suffering: When you experience emotional or physical pain, do not let it waste away in bitterness. Offer it up in union with the Cross of Jesus for the salvation of your family and the peace of the world.

6. Self-Reflection and Conclusion

As we prepare to encounter our Lord in the Holy Eucharist today, let us quietly ask ourselves:

 1. What is the cross in my life right now that I am constantly trying to run away from or complain about?

 2. Am I trying to fit in with the worldly culture of comfort, or am I willing to stand up for Christ even when it costs me?

 3. Is God's love a living fire inside my heart that propels me to serve others despite my own difficulties?

My dear friends, Jesus never promises that following Him will be easy, but He promises that it will be worth it. The cross is not the final chapter of our story; the Resurrection is.

Let us carry our daily crosses with courage, hold our heads high, and follow our Master with unwavering faith.

இன்றைய இறைவார்த்தை நாம் எதிர்நோக்கும் இந்த மனித வேதனையை நேரடியாகப் பேசுகிறது. உண்மையைப் பேசியதால் நிராகரிப்பைச் சந்தித்து, இறைவனிடம் தனது மனவேதனையைக் கொட்டும் எரேமியா இறைவாக்கினரை முதல் வாசகத்தில் சந்திக்கிறோம். நற்செய்தியிலோ இயேசு நமக்கு ஒரு நிதர்சனமான உண்மையைச் சொல்கிறார்: அவரைப் பின்பற்றுவது என்பது சொகுசான பயணம் அல்ல; மாறாக, நாள்தோறும் நம் சிலுவையைச் சுமந்து செல்லும் ஒரு பயணம்.

முடிவில்லா நகரத்தை நோக்கி ஒரு நீண்ட, குறுகிய பாதையில் நடந்து சென்று கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு பயணியைப் பற்றிய எளிய கதை இது. பாதையில் சென்ற எல்லாரையும் போல, அவனும் தன் தோளில் ஒரு கனமான மரச் சிலுவையைச் சுமந்து சென்றான். வெயிலில் பல மைல்கள் நடந்த பிறகு, அவன் சோர்வடைந்து இறைவனிடம் முறையிட்டான்: "ஆண்டவரே, இந்தச் சிலுவை மிகவும் கனமாகவும் நீளமாகவும் இருக்கிறது. நான் எளிதாகப் பயணம் செய்ய இதன் ஒரு சிறிய பகுதியை மட்டும் வெட்ட அனுமதியுங்கள்."

அவன் மனதிற்குள் ஒரு அமைதியான குரல் கேட்டது: "அதுவே உன் விருப்பம் என்றால், நீ அதை வெட்டிக்கொள்ளலாம்." எனவே, அந்தப் பயணி ஒரு ரம்பத்தை எடுத்துத் தன் சிலுவையின் பெரும் பகுதியை வெட்டி எறிந்தான். உடனே அவன் பாரம் குறைந்ததாக உணர்ந்து, மற்றவர்களை விட வேகமாக முன்னால் நடந்தான்.

சிறிது தூரம் சென்றதும், அந்தப் பாதை ஒரு ஆழமான, அகலமான பள்ளத்தாக்கின் விளிம்பில் திடீரென முடிந்தது. பள்ளத்தாக்கின் மறுபக்கத்திலோ 'முடிவில்லா நகரத்தின்' அழகிய வாசல்கள் தெரிந்தன. அங்கு பாலங்களோ, படகுகளோ அல்லது அக்கரையை அடைய வேறு வழிகளோ இல்லை. பின்னால் வந்த மற்ற பயணிகள், தங்களின் முழு அளவிலான சிலுவைகளை அந்தப் பள்ளத்தாக்கின் குறுக்கே பாலமாக வைத்து, அதன் மேல் பாதுகாப்பாக நடந்து மறுபக்கத்தை அடைந்தார்கள்.

இந்தப் பயணியோ தான் வெட்டிச் சிறியதாக்கிய சிலுவையை அங்கே வைக்க முயன்றான். ஆனால் அது மிகவும் சிறியதாக இருந்ததால் ஆழமான பள்ளத்தாக்கிற்குள் விழுந்தது. தான் எதைக் குறைக்க நினைத்தானோ, அந்தச் சிலுவையே தன் மீட்பிற்கான பாலமாக இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை அவன் மிகவும் தாமதமாக உணர்ந்தான்.

வாழ்வில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் அன்றாட சிலுவைகள் நம்மை அழிப்பதற்காக அல்ல; அவை நம் நற்பண்புகளை வளர்க்கவும், நம் அன்பை ஆழப்படுத்தவும், நித்திய மகிழ்ச்சிக்கான பாலமாக மாறவுமே இறைவனால் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன.

3. எரேமியாவின் விம்மலும் இயேசுவின் அழைப்பும்

முதல் வாசகத்தில், விவிலியத்திலேயே மிகவும் உண்மையான, உணர்ச்சிப்பூர்வமான ஜெபங்களில் ஒன்றை எரேமியா மன்றாடுகிறார். அவர் அலறுகிறார்: "ஆண்டவரே, என்னை ஏமாற்றிவிட்டீர்; நானும் ஏமாந்துபோனேன். நீர் என்னைவிட வலிமைமிக்கவர்; என்மேல் வெற்றி கொண்டுவிட்டீர். நாள் முழுதும் நான் நகைப்புக்கு உள்ளானேன்; எல்லாரும் என்னை ஏளனம் செய்கின்றனர்."

எரேமியா இறைவனின் செய்தியை உண்மையோடு அறிவித்தார்; ஆனால் நன்றியடைவதற்குப் பதிலாக வெறுப்பையும், சிறை தண்டனையையும், கேலியையுமே பரிசாகப் பெற்றார். அவர் மிகவும் மனமுடைந்து, "இனி அவரைப் பற்றிப் பேசமாட்டேன்; அவர் பெயரால் எதையும் அறிவிக்க மாட்டேன்" என்று முடிவு செய்தார். ஆனால், அதற்குப் பிறகு எரேமியா ஒரு வியக்கத்தக்க உண்மையை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்: "அப்பொழுது, அது என் எலும்புகளுக்குள் அடைபட்டு எரியும் தீயென என் உள்ளத்தில் இருந்தது; அதைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தி அலுத்துப் போனேன்; என்னால் இயலவில்லை." துன்பங்கள் மத்தியிலும் எரேமியாவால் இறைவனை அன்பு செய்வதை நிறுத்த முடியவில்லை, ஏனெனில் இறைவனின் வார்த்தை அவருக்குள் எரியும் நெருப்பாக இருந்தது.

மத்தேயு எழுதிய நற்செய்தியில், இயேசு தாம் படவிருக்கும் துன்பங்களையும், இறப்பையும், உயிர்த்தெழுதலையும் முன்னறிவிக்கிறார். இயேசுவை மெசியா என்று சற்று முன்ப்தான் அறிக்கையிட்ட பேதுரு, இயேசுவைத் தனியே அழைத்து கடிந்துகொள்ளத் தொடங்குகிறார்: "ஆண்டவரே, இது உமக்கு ஒருபோதும் நிகழக்கூடாது!"

பேதுரு துன்பமில்லாத மகிமையையும், சிலுவையில்லாத முடியையும் விரும்பினார். ஆனால் இயேசு பேதுருவைப் பார்த்து கடுமையாகக் கூறுகிறார்: "என் கண்முன் நின்று போ, சாத்தானே! நீ எனக்குத் தடையாக இருக்கிறாய்; ஏனெனில் உன் எண்ணம் கடவுளின் எண்ணம் அல்ல, மனித எண்ணமே!"

அதன்பின் இயேசு தம் சீடர்களைப் பார்த்து இவ்வாறு பிரகடனம் செய்கிறார்: "என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வர விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து தம் சிலுவையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வரட்டும். ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக் கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்துவிடுவர். மாறாக, என் பொருட்டுத் தம் உயிரை இழக்கும் எவரும் அதைக் கண்டடைவர்."

4. கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் போதனையும் புனிதர்களின் ஞானமும்

ஒவ்வொரு கிறிஸ்தவனுக்கும் சிலுவை ஏன் அவசியமானது என்பதைப் பற்றித் திருச்சபையும் புனிதர்களும் தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார்கள்:

கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் மறைக்கல்வி (CCC):

 * CCC 2015: ஆன்மிக வளர்ச்சி என்பது ஒடுக்கத்தையும் (askesis) தபத்தையும் உள்ளடக்கியது. இது நம்மை அட்டவணைகளின் அமைதிக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சிக்கும் வழிநடத்துகிறது. முழுமையின் பாதை சிலுவையின் வழியே செல்கிறது. துறவும் ஆன்மிகப் போரும் இன்றி எவ்விதப் புனிதத்துவமும் இல்லை.

 * CCC 618: கிறிஸ்து தம் திருப்பாடுகளால் நமக்கு ஒரு முன்மாதிரியைத் தந்துள்ளார். தம் மீட்பின் பலியில் நம்மையெல்லாம் பங்காளிகளாக்க அவர் விரும்புகிறார்.

புனிதர்களின் வார்த்தைகள்:

 * புனித ரோஸ் லீமா: "சிலுவையைத் தவிர, நாம் விண்ணகம் செல்வதற்கு வேறு ஏணியே இல்லை."

 * சிலுவையின் புனித யோவான்: "உனக்குக் கடினமான அல்லது விரும்பத்தகாத எது நடந்தாலும், சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்ட கிறிஸ்துவை நினைவுகூர்ந்து அமைதியாய் இரு."

 * புனித அகுஸ்தினார்: "நீ கிறிஸ்துவைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்புகிறாயா? உன் சிலுவையை எடுத்துக்கொள்; ஏனெனில் சிலுவை இல்லாமல் நீ மகிமையின் முடியை அடைய முடியாது."

5. நம் அன்றாட வாழ்விற்கான நடைமுறைப் பயிற்சிகள்

இந்த வாரம் நம் சிலுவையைச் சுமந்து இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்ற நாம் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?

 * ஜெபத்தில் இறைவனிடம் உண்மையாய் இருங்கள்: உங்கள் வலி, குழப்பம், அல்லது சோர்வை இறைவனிடமிருந்து மறைக்காதீர்கள். எரேமியாவைப் போல உங்கள் உண்மையான உணர்வுகளை அவரிடம் கொண்டு வாருங்கள். உங்கள் கண்ணீர், சந்தேகங்கள் மற்றும் கதறல்களைத் தாங்கும் வல்லமை இறைவனுக்கு உண்டு.

 * அன்றாட சிலுவையை அன்போடு ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள்: சிலுவை என்பது எப்போதுமே பெரிய மரக்கட்டை அல்ல; அது பெரும்பாலும் நம் அன்றாடச் சிறிய சிரமங்களே நோயில் இருக்கும் குடும்ப உறுப்பினரைப் பராமரித்தல், கடினமான சக ஊழியரைச் சகித்துக்கொள்ளல், நோயைப் பொறுமையோடு தாங்குதல், அல்லது காயப்படுத்திய ஒருவரை மன்னிப்பது.

 * உலகிற்கு இணங்க வாழாதீர்கள்: புனித பவுல் உரோமையருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்தில் உரைப்பது போல: "இந்த உலகத்தின் போக்கின்படி ஒழுகாதீர்கள்; மாறாக உங்கள் மனம் புதுப்பிக்கப்பெற்று உருமாற்றமடைவதாக." சுற்றிலும் உள்ளவர்கள் தவறான வழியில் செல்கிறார்கள் என்பதற்காக உங்கள் ஒழுக்க நெறிகளைக் குறைத்துக் கொள்ளாதீர்கள்.

 * உங்கள் துன்பங்களை ஒப்புக் கொடுங்கள்: உங்களுக்கு மனவேதனையோ உடல்நலக் குறைவோ ஏற்படும்போது, அதை கசப்போடு வீணடித்து விடாதீர்கள். உங்கள் குடும்பத்தின் மீட்பிற்காகவும், உலக அமைதிக்காகவும் அதை இயேசுவின் சிலுவையோடு இணைத்து ஒப்புக்கொடுங்கள்.

6. சுயஆய்வும் முடிவும்

இன்று தூய நற்கருணை வழிபாட்டில் நம் ஆண்டவரைச் சந்திக்க ஆயத்தமாகும் வேளையில், நம்மையே அமைதியாகக் கேட்டுக்கொள்வோம்:

 * என் வாழ்வில் நான் தப்பிச்செல்ல அல்லது குறை கூறிக்கொண்டே இருக்க நினைக்கும் சிலுவை எது?

 * உலகச் சொகுசுகளுக்கு இணங்கி வாழ முயல்கிறேனா, அல்லது இழப்புகள் வந்தாலும் கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக நின்கிறேனா?

 * சவால்கள் மத்தியிலும் பிறருக்குப் பணியாற்றத் தூண்டும் இறைவனின் அன்பு என் இதயத்தில் எரியும் நெருப்பாக இருக்கிறதா?

என் அன்பான நண்பர்களே, இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றுவது எளிதானது என்று அவர் ஒருபோதும் வாக்குறுதி அளிக்கவில்லை; ஆனால் அது மதிப்பற்றது என்று அவர் உறுதியளிக்கிறார். சிலுவை என்பது நம் கதையின் முடிவு அல்ல; உயிர்த்தெழுதலே அதன் முடிவு.

நம்பிக்கையோடு நம் அன்றாடச் சிலுவைகளைச் சுமப்போம், தலைநிமிர்ந்து நம் தலைவரைத் தளராத விசுவாசத்தோடு பின்பற்றுவோம்.
