 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture Readings: Isaiah 25:6–10a | Philippians 4:12–14, 19–20 | Matthew 22:1–14

Central Theme: Responding to God's gracious invitation to the heavenly banquet, wearing the wedding garment of grace, and letting our daily actions reflect our friendship with Him.

1. Introduction: Called a Friend, Yet Living Like a Stranger

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Consider two boys who grew up together, sharing their dreams, secrets, and the daily difficulties of life. They were more than classmates; they were close friends. One day, one of them was wrongly accused of something he had not done. He looked toward his friend, hoping that he would speak up and tell the truth. But the friend lowered his eyes and remained silent, afraid of getting into trouble himself. After the incident, the disappointed boy asked him, "I thought you were my friend. Why did you leave me alone when I needed you most?" The other boy had no answer. He knew that he was called a friend, but his actions had failed to express that friendship.

Something similar invites us to reflect on today's Gospel. The king notices a man at the wedding feast who is not wearing a wedding garment and asks him a striking question: "Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?" The man remains silent.

This dramatic encounter challenges our own spiritual lives. Is it enough to simply be called a friend of God, or must our daily lives also show that we truly belong to Him?

2. An Illustrative Story: The Banquet of the Open Doors

In the ancient world, royal wedding banquets were extraordinary events. The king would send out invitations to the elite, but when they refused out of indifference or preoccupation with their farms and businesses, the king did something radical. He told his servants to go out to the highways and crossroads and invite everyone they could find—the poor, the broken, the weary, and the wandering, bad and good alike.

Imagine being one of those people wandering on a dusty road, ragged and unworthy, suddenly told that the king's palace doors are wide open for you. You enter the grand hall, surrounded by luxury, warmth, and a feast prepared with immense love. The king welcomes you not because of your status, but purely out of his generosity.

Yet, the parable takes a sobering turn when the king inspects the guests and finds someone who chose not to put on the wedding garment provided at the entrance. He accepted the invitation to the feast, but he refused to let the experience change his outward appearance. He wanted the privileges of the banquet without the transformation of the garment.

3. Scriptural Context: The Feast of Salvation and the Garment of Grace

In our First Reading from the prophet Isaiah, we hear a breathtaking prophecy about this very feast. Isaiah tells us that the Lord of hosts is preparing a banquet of rich food and fine wines for all peoples on His mountain. He will destroy the veil that covers nations, swallow up death forever, and wipe away tears from every face. God's heart is a heart that hosts a universal feast.

In the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, Jesus uses the wedding banquet to show the radical nature of the kingdom of heaven. God's invitation is open to everyone, but entering the banquet requires a response.

What is the wedding garment? Christian tradition has long understood the garment not as something we buy or earn, but as the grace of a transformed life. As Saint Paul reminds us in his letters, we must clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, and above all with love. We cannot sit at the banquet of the Eucharist on Sunday and live entirely unchanged lives on Monday. Our actions must match our invitation.

4. Catholic Teaching and the Wisdom of the Saints

The Church teaches that friendship with God requires an active, living response of love that transforms our daily conduct.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church:

 * CCC 1694 teaches that Christians are joined to Christ Jesus in Baptism. They must follow His example, manifest His life in their daily behavior, and take part in His Paschal Mystery by dying to sin and rising to newness of life.

 * CCC 2045 reminds us that the moral life is bound up with the liturgy of the Church, because liturgical worship finds its true expression when it inspires acts of charity and justice in everyday life.

Words from the Saints:

 * Saint Augustine taught: God has created us without us, but He will not save us without us. His grace invites us to the feast, but we must cooperate by putting on the robes of charity and virtue.

 * Saint John Henry Newman observed: A cold heart cannot worship a loving God. True faith must always express itself in tender compassion toward our neighbors.

 * Saint Teresa of Calcutta reminded us: Holiness is not a luxury for the few; it is a simple duty for you and me, putting on the garment of Christ's love in the ordinary moments of our day.

5. Practical Applications for Daily Life

How can we ensure that we are wearing the wedding garment of grace in our daily routines this week?

 * Examine Your Daily Interactions: Look at how you treat your family members, coworkers, and neighbors. Are you bringing patience and kindness into your home, or are you leaving your faith at the church door?

 * Accept God's Mercy Daily: Acknowledge that you were invited from the crossroads of your own brokenness. Approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation to wash away old habits and put on the clean garment of grace.

 * Align Your Words with Your Actions: If you call yourself a friend of Jesus, let your speech reflect His gentleness and your hands reflect His service to the poor and lonely.

 * Prepare for the Eucharist with Intention: When you come to Mass, consciously thank God for inviting you to His heavenly banquet, and ask Him to transform your heart so you may leave ready to love others.

6. Self-Reflection and Conclusion

As we prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist today, let us quietly ask ourselves:

 * Have I accepted God's invitation to His feast, or am I too distracted by my own farm and business to truly pay attention to Him?

 * Is my daily life wearing the wedding garment of compassion and love, or am I walking through my relationships wrapped in indifference and impatience?

 * When the Lord looks at my heart today and calls me His friend, do my actions genuinely reflect that friendship?

My dear friends, Jesus has called us His friends, and He has opened the doors of His eternal banquet to every one of us. Let us not remain silent or unchanged by His grace. May our homes, our communities, and our relationships radiate the love of the One who has invited us to His feast.

Lord Jesus, You have called me Your friend; help me to live each day in a way that reflects Your love.

Amen.
