(25.10.2026) 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Scripture Readings: Exodus 22:20–26 | 1 Thessalonians 1:5c–10 | Matthew 22:34–40
Love begins at home, love as the hinge of all commandments, and putting love into action for God and neighbor.
1. Introduction: The Million-Dollar Question
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
There is a famous story told about Mother Teresa of Kolkata. One day, a rich visitor saw her washing the open wounds of a man suffering from leprosy. The visitor looked on in shock and said, "I would not do this work even for a million dollars." Mother Teresa paused, smiled gently, and replied, "I also would not do it for a million dollars. But I do it happily for the love of God."
It was the exact same work. For the visitor, it was repulsive and unbearable. For Mother Teresa, it was a profound joy. What made all the difference? Love.
2. Scriptural Context: The Greatest Commandment and the Door Hinge
In today's Gospel from Saint Matthew, we encounter a teacher of the Law who approaches Jesus with a test. In those days, religious scholars had cataloged hundreds of different rules and regulations. He wanted to know which one mattered most: "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?"
Jesus answers with crystal clarity, drawing straight from the Old Testament: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." He then declares that on these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
Think of the heavy front door of your house. It hangs entirely on a single hinge. If that hinge breaks or rusts away, the heavy door becomes completely useless, crashing to the ground. Jesus tells us that all of God's commandments depend on love. Love is the hinge of our entire spiritual life. Without love, everything falls apart.
We do not keep God's commandments instead of loving; we keep them because we love.
3. The Difference Between Mechanical Duty and Genuine Love
We can easily see this difference in our daily family lives. Think of a mother who wakes up early every single morning, cooks meals, cleans the house, washes clothes, and works tirelessly all day for her children. Nobody forces her to do it. Nobody pays her a salary for every little sacrifice she makes. Love makes every single task meaningful and light.
However, when love fades or is missing, even good things become heavy, burdensome chores. We end up praying only out of rigid habit. We go to Sunday Mass only because we feel a heavy obligation. We help others only when people are watching us. The external work or action may look identical, but the heart inside is completely empty.
As Saint Augustine famously said: "Love, and do what you will." He did not mean that we can act carelessly or selfishly. He meant that when our hearts are genuinely transformed and filled with authentic love, all our actions will naturally begin to reflect that love.
4. Love Begins at Home
Where should this transformative love begin? It does not start in some far-off place; it begins right at home, in our own families and religious communities.
Saint John reminds us in his letter: "Whoever does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen."
Do we speak with tenderness, patience, and love to our parents, our husbands or wives, our children, and our brothers and sisters? Sadly, many families become fractured and divided over land, money, pride, and petty arguments. Elderly parents often sit alone in rooms, waiting quietly for a simple telephone call or visit from their children. Sometimes, one simple phone call communicates more genuine love than any expensive gift ever could.
Love is rarely found in grand, cinematic gestures. It is expressed through small, everyday choices: saying "sorry" to someone we have hurt, visiting a sick neighbor, patiently listening to an elderly person who feels lonely, or helping another person without expecting anything in return. As Saint Paul reminds us: "Let all that you do be done in love." Not just some things. All things.
5. Practical Applications for Daily Life
How can we put this message of home-grown love into practice this week?
* Audit Your Daily Duties: Choose one duty this week that you usually perform out of mere obligation or habit—whether it is caring for a family member, doing household chores, or serving in the parish. Offer it consciously out of love for God.
* Make the Call: Reach out to a family member, parent, or relative whom you have neglected or haven't spoken to in a while. Let them know they are wanted and loved.
* Practice Small Acts of Grace: Choose to say "I am sorry" or "I forgive you" in a relationship where pride has created a wall.
* Let Love Be the Hinge: Before you pray, serve, or give this week, pause and whisper a prayer asking God to fill your heart with His love so your actions are never empty.
6. Self-Reflection and Conclusion
As we come forward to receive the Holy Eucharist today, let us quietly ask ourselves:
* Am I serving God and my family out of genuine love, or am I running on the empty fuel of rigid habit and obligation?
* Is there someone in my own home who is waiting for a word of kindness, patience, or forgiveness from me?
* How can I let love become the hinge of everything I do this week?
My dear brothers and sisters, the commandments show us the path, but love gives life to everything we do.
Lord Jesus, teach us to love as You taught us.
Amen.
