32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Scripture Readings: Wisdom 6:12–16 | 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 | Matthew 25:1–13
Central Theme: Personal responsibility in the spiritual life, cultivating daily zeal, and guarding against the slow decay of spiritual laziness.
1. Introduction: You Cannot Borrow Battery
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
A man once boarded a long international flight with his phone battery sitting at a critical ten percent. "It is fine," he thought to himself. "I will just charge it on the plane." But when he settled into his seat and looked around, there was no available charging socket. In desperation, he turned to the passenger next to him and asked, "Could I borrow ten or twenty percent of your battery?" The neighbor smiled sympathetically and replied, "I would gladly help you, but battery power simply does not work that way."
The foolish virgins in today's Gospel learned this exact same lesson at midnight.
When the bridegroom arrived, the five foolish maidens realized their lamps were sputtering out and begged the wise ones for oil. But some things in life simply cannot be handed over at the last minute. Spiritual zeal, personal prayer, and character cannot be borrowed.
2. An Illustrative Story: Green Fields and Yesterday's Care
A visitor once walked through a beautiful village and noticed a farm with lush, vibrant green crops stretching as far as the eye could see, while neighboring fields looked dry and withered. He approached the elderly farmer and asked, "What is the secret to your fields being so green today?"
The farmer paused, leaned on his wooden fence, and answered: "They are green today because I cared for them yesterday, and the day before that, and every day when no one was watching."
So it is with our faith. What keeps our spiritual life burning bright during sudden trials, grief, or temptation is the hidden oil we have faithfully accumulated in quiet moments over the years.
Notice that today's Gospel does not say the wise virgins stayed awake while the foolish ones slept. Scripture tells us that all ten became tired and fell asleep. The vital difference was not that the wise never grew tired, but what they had prepared before sleep came.
3. Scriptural Context: The Oil of the Hidden Life
In the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25, the oil represents the hidden life of the soul: our personal friendship with God, our quiet moments of prayer, our small acts of unspoken forgiveness, and our daily fidelity to grace. We can encourage one another, pray for one another, and support one another in community, but no one can lend us their personal relationship with God.
Many of us fail to recognize spiritual laziness because it rarely looks like sitting idle. We can be busy from morning until night—attending meetings, organizing church programs, fulfilling professional responsibilities, and helping others—yet slowly neglect the one central relationship that gives divine meaning to everything we do.
The Book of Proverbs offers a gentle warning about this subtle decay: "A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come upon you like a robber." The oil in our lamp runs low one postponed prayer at a time.
Our First Reading from the Book of Wisdom reminds us that divine wisdom is readily found by those who seek her early. She is not hidden from those who watch for her. God asks us to seek Him today, while the light is still bright.
4. Catholic Teaching and the Witness of the Saints
The Church teaches that while we are saved by grace, we are called to actively cooperate with that grace daily through perseverance and vigilance.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church:
* CCC 2742 reminds us that prayer is a vital necessity. Nothing else can substitute for personal communion with God, and neglecting prayer leads directly to spiritual apathy.
* CCC 2016 teaches that spiritual progress tends toward ever more intimate union with Christ. This union requires continuous conversion and daily exertion in charity.
Wisdom from the Saints:
* Saint Teresa of Ávila understood deeply that prayer is not always filled with warm feelings or emotional consolation. She warned her sisters that the fervor with which someone begins their religious vocation or spiritual journey can easily fade into mechanical routine. She urged perseverance in prayer even when the heart feels completely dry and distracted, teaching that true love of God is revealed not when we feel enthusiastic, but when we remain faithful without any special feeling.
* Saint John of the Cross noted that a soul that grows slack in small daily devotions will gradually find itself defenseless when great temptations arrive.
5. Practical Applications for Daily Life
How can we keep our spiritual lamps filled with oil this week?
* Stop Postponing Your Prayer Life: Avoid telling yourself, "I will pray more when life calms down." Life rarely calms down on its own. Reserve fifteen quiet minutes every morning for God before checking emails or social media.
* Invest in Your Family Relationships Today: Do not wait for a major crisis to express affection, clear up misunderstandings, or offer forgiveness in your home. Say "I love you" and "I am sorry" today.
* Practice Fidelity in Small Things: When doing your daily work or parish duties, perform them intentionally for the love of God rather than out of passive routine.
* Choose "Today" Over "Tomorrow": Spiritual laziness always whispers, "Tomorrow." Holy zeal always responds, "Today." Choose one small act of penance or charity to perform before this day ends.
6. Self-Reflection and Conclusion
As we prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist today, let us quietly reflect on these three questions:
* Is the oil in my spiritual lamp running low because I have been postponing my personal time with God?
* Am I relying on the faith of my parents, spouse, or parish community instead of cultivating my own friendship with Jesus?
* What is one practical step I can take today to ensure I am ready when the Lord calls my name?
My dear friends, the Gospel closes with a sobering line: "And the door was shut." The foolish virgins had good intentions, but good intentions alone cannot fill an empty lamp. God does not demand that we be flawless, but He does ask us to be faithful, watchful, and prepared.
Let us not wait until midnight to discover that our lamps are out of oil.
Lord, free us from spiritual laziness and fill our hearts with the zeal to remain faithful to You.
Amen.

Catechism (CCC):

Praise The Lord 🙏
